Shop in style: In a prime location yet “second tier”, the Stilwerk Düsseldorf is located on a side street off Dusseldorf’s Königsallee. Sop | architekten not only had to develop a unique architecture, but also meet high density requirements. Top-flight businesses needed the best sales and presentation opportunities over five floors.
The result was a rising ellipsoid structure that springs back strongly from the edges of the rectangular cubature of its pedestal. The upper floors of the building contain office space used by an advertising agency and retail galleries developed in tandem with the centre’s 32-metre-high interior, which is crowned by a glass roof that can be opened. The materials used – steel, glass, terrazzo and wood – create a deliberately restrained atmosphere that is not overly cool, but leaves the retail spaces to take centre stage. Stilwerk Düsseldorf received the BDA Prize in 2002.
sop | architekten (formerly JSK Düsseldorf) working on behalf of JSK Architekten GbR and/or JSK International GmbH, provided the work in phases 1-5, in accordance with the German HOAI.
